They are one of very few European couples to be invited to teach in Buenos Aires at the famous ‘DNI’ school in 2009 and they regularly teach in European festivals and weekenders. In teaching as well as their own dancing, their foundations are traditional but their methods embrace modern techniques and natural, comfortable movement.
"Hiba and René are energetic hands-on instructors who teach with clarity, precision and humor. They are particularly adept at pinpointing those subtleties in each individual's dance that help improve technique and connection. Their classes are nothing short of illuminating and fun!"

Canyengue is the way that Tango was danced in the 1920s and early 30s. It was this original style which took Paris and the world by storm. It is questionable how accurately it is represented by its current practitioners, but generally we can say that dancers use close embrace with and in an offset V, small steps and bent knees. It is danced most fittingly to music by the old guard; Francisco Lomuto, Francisco Canaro (early in his career), Roberto Firpo, and Juan de Dios Filiberto.  Learning canyengue today helps more experienced dancers achieve a more relaxed and grounded dance, and it's easy and fun, allowing more time and space to play.

Vanja and Alexis are available for private lessons before class on Friday and Saturday.  Contact them directly to schedule: alexis@panix.com  vanja.modzelewski@gmail.com

Vanja Modzelewski  is a highly experienced dancer in both - open and in close embrace. Her proficiency in the various styles of tango along with her sophisticated musicality has made her one of the better known female dancers in the US. Vanja's dance style is characterized with fluidity and sensual elegance. She has a profound knowledge of movements and partner connection and is a sought after lead who has been teaching group and private classes in tango with a partner and on her own for over 8 years. Currently Vanja is working together with Alexis Rosen. During the past years, among others, she has taught and performed with Constantin Rueger (Germany), Robin Thomas (NY), Murat Erdemsel (Washington, DC), Ney Melo (San Francisco), Hernan Brizuela (Buenos Aires), Armando Orzuza (Buenos Aires) and Junior Cervila (Buenos Aires).

Alexis Rosen
has been dancing Tango for eight years, and teaching in New York City for the last three. He first gained notice as an original and creative leader of Tango Nuevo. However, in the last couple of years he has focussed closely on close embrace as well. Alexis believes that great dance is built on musicality, connection to the partner, and fundamental movement technique. Many of his classes start with a specific sequence of movements, which are then used to explore those three topics in depth. The first teachers to strongly influence Alexis were Robin Thomas and Mario Consiglieri. While he has learned from numerous other teachers in Buenos Aires and the U.S. since then, the biggest influence on his dance comes from the many great followers he has danced with, including his partner Vanja.

Their aim is the connection and creativity, teaching an updated classical Tango, and giving the students the elements to achieve a personal style.

Marika and Mauro provide their students the possibility of getting a strong dancing communication. Dancers found comfort in the physical space and with their dancing partner, with a great earth connection and movement fluently. With a great physical consciousness, students work on their body control achieving different dynamics in their movements without loosing the typical sensuality of Tango.

Raphael's playful approach to tango emphasizes the subtleties of a deep connection and helps dancers discover their musical personas, find their own path to surprising their partners and renew their dance.
Influnced by his extensive background in martial arts and gymnastics, he naturally grew away from parkour into a more improvised and less dangerous lifestyle choice. While he's based in Montreal, he regularly teaches at various tango festivals in the USA and Canada from San Francisco to New York.
Inspired, amongst others, by Stéphane Villeneuve, Marika Landry and Tomas Howlin, he's one of the most daring tango teacher in Northern America.

Also, a special reading of Violet and Durant's new Tango book:

Dyv Saraza's new novel explores the transnational experience of Argentine Tango. More than an elaborate and difficult dance, tango is a culture of intimacy, desire, and dignity. Aleph Bravo Tango is also perhaps the only text ever written about tango which never uses the word ‘passion.’ No mere romance or memoir, the intricately woven stories take you to tango’s true mysteries — the elation, the frustration, the compulsion. This is the tango that changes lives.

“...an unforgettable journey to an underground world ... a breath of fresh air to the genre of novel.”   — Anahid Aramouni Keshishian

“This book didn't just make me laugh. It also made me feel mad, happy, nostalgic, empathetic, represented, respected, proud... It  broke my heart and then mended it. If you want to know what happens to those who have been seduced by tango, look no further…but beware, you may find that there’s a tanguero in you too, and after that, there’s no going back.”   — Barbara Salas

“Exquisite.”   — Kristina Olsen

Adam Hoopengardner excels in many styles of tango. His philosophy of tango is centered on the energy one feels from one's partner, and believes this should inspire the style and movement of the dance. He is confident dancing in open or close embrace and is cherished by followers for his comfortable, clear lead, his creativity, and inspiring musicality. When teaching he is able to transmit his mastery of the complex concepts of tango while retaining his innate humor and humility. He bases his classes on the abilities of his students and is able to help them expand their skill and understanding of the dance.
Adam has worked across the US, Canada, Germany, and Poland teaching workshops and at festivals often returning more than once. He is based in New York and Berlin. He has performed and worked with some of todays leading ladies of tango including, Cigdem Tanik, Brigitta Winkler, Rebecca Shulman, and Silvina Vals.

Ciko's motivation to pursue tango has been the connection to another soul & body, as well as her own, through a music that inspires her. During her visits to Buenos Aires she focused solely in the dance in its original grounds exploring and studying both traditional and nuevo tango roots which developed the Argentine quality in her dance. She embraced both open and close embrace which allowed the ability to move fluidly between the two and be more dynamic and versatile. Her technique gives her a non-restrictive connection with various dancers. Her dance is defined by its sensuality, creative playfulness, musicality and elasticity.
She emphasizes the importance of a good technique with a comfortable, musical walk over complicated moves. Her goal as a teacher is to bring her students’ personality out in their dance by teaching them the music and the concept of countless possibilities the dance offers. She cannot over emphasize the value of being an active follower which makes the dance much more interactive and fun.
She has worked across US and Canada teaching workshops and at festivals. Has worked and performed with powerful leaders such as Adam Hoopengardner, Felipe Martinez, Robin Thomas, Evan Griffiths and Daniel Tuero.

The Alexander Technique for Life and Tango: Finding Poise in Motion Two Fridays with Pamela Slavsky

As dancers, we want to improve our technique, enjoy our dancing more, and avoid injury.  We know that in practice these simple goals have multiple interpretations, are subject to opinion, and sometimes seem in conflict.

In this seminar, you’ll be introduced to the principles of the Alexander Technique, a method for learning how to use your mind to free your body to operate with elegance and efficiency. The Technique has comprehensive usefulness throughout daily living, but in the century since its creation has found a special attraction for artists, performers and athletes.

The Alexander Technique offers a point of view that can have broad application in how we approach our goals in tango, as well as specific understanding about the dynamics of bodies in motion.  We’ll look at how the principles can help create focus and short circuit stubborn habits in order to reduce unnecessary tension, improve stability, and allow greater freedom of motion.  Ultimately, these important factors will increase comfort and communication in our dancing, and can open new possibilities for self expression.

On Dec. 5th Steve Slavsky will be our special guest DJ for the Tango Incident.

Shortly after, he began teaching tango in different cities around Argentina.  He has taken part in Tango Discovery in Argentina, invited by Mauricio Castro and then toured Central America and Europe. Together with Dutch and French dancers he took part in "Tangokobinat," a tango festival presented in Germany and assisted Fabian Salas in CITA, the annual tango convention in Buenos Aires. Recently he has been teaching extensively in Europe.  Damian's dance is characterized by a masterful combination of nuevo tango elements with traditional tango aesthetics. Seamless transitions between the various elements and a keen sense of musicality are emphasized in his dance and are applied in his teaching, training, and dancing.

Starting her tango career in Portland (OR), tango has now taken Jennifer all over the world.  Jennifer has taught  at festivals and givenworkshops around the world with known tango masters Alex Krebs, Robin Thomas, and her current partner, Damian Lobato, from Argentina.  Jennifer's dance is characterized by her desire to strive for versatility. She believes it is integral to master not only close and open embrace, but also everything in-between.  After having a connected and comfortable embrace, nothing is more important to Jennifer than the music. This is transmitted in her teaching, as she approaches every class with a strong command over the music. She has extensive experience DJing traditional and alternative milongas in tango communities worldwide.

Jennifer and Damian will also be available for private lessons. Contact Ellen to schedule.

CARLOS & TOVA MORENO

Tova and Carlos merge the grace of tango's past and the innovations of its present with the connection and musicality that has always defined the tango. As they flow between open and close embrace, their style showcases extremes found in traditional and modern tango music. They mix deep, powerful elements with small playful movements; brow-furrows and secret smiles. For them, the dance is nothing if it doesn't reflect the varied texture of a good tango song.

"EncanTango" is Debora Blake's new documentary film on the world of the Argentine Tango. Filmed across Europe, it explores the fascination with tango far from its origins in Buenos Aires and closely in tune with the personal experiences of those who've been drawn to it. Debora intimately explores the tango's intriguingly universal appeal, capturing its sensuality in the performances of professional dancers and musicians and contrasting that with the difficulties encountered by its aficionados as they strive to master not only the dance but its language and codes.

"EncanTango" is 86 minutes of discovery, sprinkled with humor and filled with emotion.

Please join us for a special screening of "EncanTango" at ProvidenceTango followed by a Q&A with Debora where we'll discuss the film and the fascination surrounding the Tango and share our respective experiences.

Sherri and Stephane have been dancing tango since 1999. Tireless social dancers, they can be seen in festivals across North America, dancing the night away.

Their main thought is that tango should be fun! When teaching, they focus on strong fundamentals to foster the understanding of the dance. Thankyou to everyone for making the 3rd Annual Alternative Tango Festival, May 2006  such an outstanding success.

It was great to see so many old friends, to dance with even more new ones, and to share ProvidenceTango with each of you. Thank you for spending the weekend with us, sharing meals and so many dances. We truly appreciate your patience and tolerance with regard to the extreme heat and humidity; not to mention the abnormal "growth" on our dance floor. We're in the process of correcting both situations.

Thank you to the wonderfully talented instructors (Homer Ladas, Mariana Galassi, Jaimes Friedgen and Tova & Carlos Moreno) and DJ's (Homer Ladas, Jaimes Friedgen, Shorey Meyers and Lori Coyle) who inspired us and kept us on the dance floor.

A special thanks to the volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty to keep us all happy, hydrated, and stress free. And to our local community members who served as surrogate hosts, your contributions were priceless.

Keep in touch to see photos and performance videos from the Festival. And if you have any photos or videos you'd like to share please send them our way.

Planning has begun for ProvidenceTango's New Years 2007 celebration. Keep your email boxes open for details. Registration Opens June 15, 2006.

In the meantime, please use our Anonymous Feedback link (or email thuy@providencetango.com) to let us know how we can improve the Alternative Tango Festival for you next year.
